Hi, this is me taking a break from the hustle and bustle of preparing for exams and sharing my thoughts. It’s International Womens’ day and I’m really happy. The theme for this year in particular makes me somewhat happy because it’s so expressive and motivating.

Sometime ago I had an acquaintance(we’re no longer on speaking terms btw) tell me about how the fuss about women was too much and how we were no longer prejudiced and how we have some sort of privilege.

The first thing that came to my mind was to tell him off but I decided against it, and I decided enlighten him, I started by telling him how in Northern Nigeria women are still looked down on and treated like slaves. I told him about unequal pay and how there was no adequate provison for women in building a career and he told me that that was why women belonged in homes and not offices.

I even went on narrate a trilogy I read, Princess, and about how women were greatly mistreated and instead of opening his mind, he shrugged his shoulders and told me that that was the way life was and nothing I could do was going to change it.

How does this relate to the theme you may be wondering, well, my acquaintance here chose to accept an unjust world because he was benefiting from it and because no harm was coming to him, and there are so many people who are satisfied with what and how the world has turned and do not want to change it.

This year’s theme teaches me to be bolder, to fight more and more against the stereotypes and prove myself worthy. Gender, something I have no control of shouldn’t a deciding factor to my fate. We must all choose to fight for what is just and right which is equality.

I’d stop by leaving a famous quote, “strong women, may we raise them, may we know them, may we be them”.
